For most of us, there are a significant number of different goals and dreams that we want to accomplish over the course of our lives, in addition to a wide number of different duties and obligations that we have to attend to on a daily basis.

When all of these things are added up together, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed – and to feel as though you need to constantly be looking ahead, planning in detail, and trying to account for all possible variables and eventualities before they arise.

Ultimately, though, there’s a lot to be said for the positive effects of just taking one step at a time in life, in many different ways.

Here are some reasons to take things one step at a time.

Because the future will always contain surprise twists and turns

For better or for worse, the future will always contain surprise twists and turns that you couldn’t have predicted beforehand – and it will often be these kinds of events that have some of the biggest impact on the course of your life as a whole, and on how things develop.

While it’s important to have a good idea of the kind of direction you want to head in, in your life, allowing yourself to get overly caught up in elaborate long-term plans can make you less capable of properly reacting to those unforeseen circumstances when they arise, and can also put you in a heightened state of stress and anxiety.

Often, the best way to remain fairly flexible in the face of future uncertainty, is to primarily focus on taking things one step at a time.

Because the present moment is where life really happens, and it’s where you have the most ability to influence things

Although it’s possible to spend all your time totally preoccupied with the future or the past, the present moment is where life really happens and unfolds, and it’s where you have the most ability to actually influence things.

Take things one step at a time helps to bring your awareness back to the present moment, and to remind you of the things you can do here and now, to improve your life, or to adjust course.

Becoming too disconnected from the present moment, on the other hand, can cause you to feel disempowered, and can make it significantly harder to actually influence things.

Because doing your best in each given moment is the best way of helping to resolve or mitigate many issues

There are many different issues that you may be confronted with over the course of your life – with some of them being very serious and difficult.

Particularly with regards to situations that are hard to take in, focusing on simply doing your best in each given moment is often the best way of helping to resolve or mitigate these issues.

In any given moment, “your best” might mean contacting a Birth Injury Solicitor, working to meet a deadline, or being there for your family when they are in need. But if you do your best, you will be much less likely to live with regret in any event.
